Understanding the Need

It is not difficult to understand the need for solar energy solutions in less developed countries if you can imagine your own life without electricity. You would have no lights. You would cook by burning wood, coal or other material. You could not refrigerate foods. Drinking water could not be purified. Communication would be limited. Think of how difficult life would be.

Now think about some facts of life in rural areas of less developed nations.

  • According to the U.S. Department of Energy, two billion people worldwide are currently living without electricity.
  • More than two million villages in less developed nations are without electricity for water supply, refrigeration, lighting, and other basic needs.
  • The United Nations estimates that 1.3 billion people in less developed nations are living on less than $1 per day.
  • In some very poor countries in Africa, the per capita income is less than US $200 per year.
  • Lack of electricity exaggerates the poverty of and poor quality of life for people in less developed nations. These nations do not have the infrastructure or resources to bring electricity to the villages and people of rural areas.

Fortunately, solar energy is already there. The use of solar energy in these countries will help to alleviate human suffering due to contaminated water and provide for other basic needs.  See our projects for some examples of how Solar Liberty Foundation is helping.

By introducing solar electricity, solar water purification and solar cooking into this equation, assistance from Solar Liberty Foundation allows people in these areas to concentrate their energy on economic development, a better quality of life and a brighter future.
