Empower Tanzania
A New School For Girls
Project Location: Mara Region, TanzaniaThe Buffalo – Tanzania Education Project (BTEP) is a collaboration between State University of New York at Buffalo's administrators, professors, community activists, Solar Liberty Foundation, and educators from Tanzania.
BTEP plans to build a comprehensive school for girls starting with a pre-school in the Mara Region in Tanzania. The school will focus on girls because gender inequalities in Tanzania mean that girls are less-likely to be educated than boys. Without an education, girls in the rural area of Mara often marry at the age of 13 and begin having children ending their chance for an education and to end the cycle that traps 60% of Tanzanian women in absolute poverty.
Solar Liberty Foundation's solar electrification system for the school will provide power for lighting, computer access, and the ability to cook. The pre-school will also focus on providing a center for mothers to obtain information and training, computer access, and a distribution center for Solar Liberty Foundation's solar cookers.
